In last month’s edition of the Crier we had hoped that we had finally located some zander, but on our return to the River Ouse we were somewhat disappointed as they turned out to be only small Pike. On one of our recent visits to our new venue we did bump into the bailiff who informed us that we could expect to catch zander here, and they could be of quite a substantial size too. So, who knows, before long we may get lucky.

A total of 20 Pike have been caught since our last report, all of which have been caught on lures ranging from soft plastics (Roach- large and small), plus Fox Hornet Spinner baits. Many of these Pike have been small, with the biggest weighing around 8lb. But on light tackle it produces great fun on these summer evenings.

On the day of writing, I have returned to Grafham Water.  Whilst it is great fun and exercise for my dogs, it’s also interesting to see the Team England Trout Team practising on the vast waters. I enquired about our chances of good pike, and was amazed to learn they have specimens up to 36lb in the depths.  We definitely plan to organise a trip there but, Pikers take note, it is only open for pike angling between mid October until the end of November so we had better organise some heftier lures and dig out our life jackets pronto.
